Old Documents Show Alito May Already Be A Winner
WASHINGTON (CT) - The National Archives has released a document from 1985 stating that Supreme Court nominee Samuel Alito Jr. may have already won 20 million dollars.
The document, which was released earlier this week, states that Alito may be the sole winner of the big $20 million jackpot, to be announced during the Super Bowl. It adds that Alito could increase his chances of winning by using the special, one-time-only deal to subscribe to as many as six of the day's top magazines, including Reader's Digest, Time or Pancake and Waffle Enthusiast.
It is unclear whether Alito took advantage of the incredible savings in the special offer. A mail carrier working in Alito's neighborhood in West Caldwell, New Jersey told reporters, "look, it's Halley's Comet" and then ran across the street to his postal vehicle. Calls to several prominent magazines went unreturned, and the 1985 Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers front office threatened reporters with "a tight end, and I don't mean the one you see on the field."
The document has added more fuel to an already heated debate over Alito's nomination. Spokesman Chris Myers of pro-Alito group Progress for America says "this only proves what President Bush has been saying... this man may be a winner."Â? Critics, including Noah Winer of MoveOn.org, say the lack of certainty as to whether Alito is a winner creates problems. "He may have a giant check for $20 million sitting in his house,"Â? Winer said. "He may not. We don't know. What's he hiding?"
Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy, ranking Democrat on the Judiciary Committee, says he will bring the issue up during confirmation hearings in January. But White House officials say they will block attempts to determine if Alito already won, or even subscribed to the fantastic magazines.
